I'm new to pond planting - how do I choose what plants to start my pond off with?
If you want a prepared pond scheme these are available on Shop/ Planting Schemes. These are in size according to the surface area of your pond.
Find the right scheme for your size of pond and we do the choosing of the plants for you. The number of plants of each type you receive is standard in a scheme but you can pick either ‘Mainly British Native’ or ‘Any plant’ or ‘British Native plants only’ from our range.
We make sure you get a balanced scheme for pond areas of assorted shelves with interest across the seasons and for varied wildlife visitors.
Can I arrange a set delivery day in advance so that we are around to plant up the pond on receipt of an order?
It is possible to arrange a specific delivery date. Let us know in General Comments as you go through Checkout what day you would like to receive delivery. We will see this and manually override the date of despatch that will be automated onto your email confirmation.
Can I plant a pond in Winter?
We will send out pond plants at any time of year except when there is ice on our ponds. You can plant anytime when there is not ice on your pond.
Our plants come rooted into their baskets so they are ‘moving home’ and are easily relocated to your pond. There can be a reduced selection in Winter but start with those available and replenish with extras when more plants return to the range in Spring.
Use our ‘Email when available’ system to give you a notification when a plant you want becomes available again.
How do I use the 'Email when available' and 'Save basket' features?
Log in as a New Member with your email address & create a password.
Click ‘Email when available’ if you want to receive notification when a ‘currently unavailable’ plant becomes available.
You can create a shopping basket and purchase later as an account holder using ‘Save basket’. Research an order in Winter and transfer it to checkout in Spring with the least amount of hassle.
Your account will reuse your mobile phone number and delivery details automatically on any purchase. This will mean less forms for you to fill in during checkout (unless you need to add secondary delivery details).
You can still purchase without an account – it is not compulsory for a purchase
What secure methods of payment are available for my order?
Our website payments are taken through the Paypal bank secure site not by ourselves. We do not see your card details but are informed by Paypal that your card payment has been accepted. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard, Delta, Maestro, Switch and Visa Electron as well as by your Paypal account if you have one.
If you wish you can phone us on 07931 557082 during the day and we can take card details over the phone and verify your payment instantly on our card machine.
We are not registered for VAT so the price you see on each plant is the price to you with the addition of the delivery charges for postage and packing which is included in the running total in the shopping basket.
How does my order arrive?
Plants will be sent out at the beginning of a week after the order is received to avoid plants being kept wrapped whilst in transit over a weekend. They should be delivered to you in 24 hours from dispatch by APC or UKMail (Highlands and Islands 48 hours) and can be tracked using the code sent to you by text or email. Container ponds will be sent by the manufacturer within 6 weeks of receipt of the order dependent on the finish size and colour as some of these are made to order.
Marginal plants and waterlilies are sent ready rooted in aquatic compost in the size basket quoted in the ‘More Information’ section of each plant. Oxygenating plants are sent as described in the ‘More Information’ section of each plant which is often as bareroot portions or bunches. Our marginal pond plants come to you in either 9cm, 1 litre=11cm and 2 litre=15cm high baskets.
All measurements for water over the top of the basket is as per the basket size indicated for that plant in the ‘More Information’ section of each.
Sizes of water plant mesh baskets?
Our marginal pond plants come to you in either 9cm= (3″), 1 litre=11cm (4″) and 2 litre=15cm (6″) high baskets. Take these basket heights into account when deciding which plant will be right for a shelf in your pond or refer to our shelf depth 0,1,2,3 in the tab above.
What is shelf 0, shelf 1, shelf 2 and shelf 3?
Shelf 0 is an area of wet mud where water will stay (especially in Winter) on a stream edge or a wet bog garden or on a shelf in a pond 10-15cm(4-6″) deep where water will just cover the top of the basket by 0-5cm (0-2″).
Shelf 1 is a shelf in a pond 15-20cm(6-8″) deep where water will cover the top of a planted basket by between 5-10cm (2-4″)
Shelf 2 is a shelf in a pond 25-40cm(10-16″) deep where water will cover the top of a planted basket by between 15-25cm (6-10″)
Shelf 3 is either a shelf or the pond floor which is deeper than 45cm(18″) deep above the top of a planted basket
Use one of these terms in our search box and all the suitable plants for that shelf depth will be shown.
Container ponds will use plants from shelf 0 or shelf 1 categories.
Search by plant name (Latin or Common), plant feature – Native, fragrant, specific flower colour required or planting conditions (use the words: moist, wet mud, sunny, shaded, shelf 0, shelf 1, shelf 2 or shelf 3 or bee, butterfly and hoverfly.)
