The moist emergence zone areas have a wonderful show of colour now with the Iris ensata, Ragged Robin & Primula. This gives a colourful backdrop to the pond and clads the moist earth around the water with foliage to keep it cool and damp. The image shows cream plumes of Filipendula ulmaria, yellow flowers on Ligularia Dentata Desdemona & purple Loosestrife - Lythrum salicaria.
Some of the early laid spawn of frogs and toads will by now have metamorphosed. Many wildlife varieties are ready to use this foliage as safety cover for their first trip from the pond. Young froglets and toadlets - should emerge any day soon.
The young frogs and toads will scramble through the rafting plants at the edge of the water and out into the undergrowth. Young newts will not be far behind as those from the early hatchings will have grown legs by now and are ready to start to leave the pond to look for places to over winter on land.
They do not want to be seen and preyed on by any birds. So they will quickly hide under the plants in the moist emergence zone for safety.
