  • Buy bareroot (each portion is approx 3 plantlets)
  • British Native Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae)
  • Floating plant that grows on runners with pale green/olive coloured leaves 2cm (approx 1/2") across
  • White flowers 2cm (approx 1/2" across) in June - August. Dormant during winter months on pond base
  • Floats freely on the pond surface in Summer in a sunny or partially shaded pond and then drops down and overwinters on pond floor as dormant buds.
  • Available only from June - September.

In strong sunshine Frogbit gets very bleached in colour so the leaf can look brown or translucent. It may drop to the base of the pond sooner than expected to avoid the very hot temperatures on the water surface.

Before the plant of Hydrocharis Morsus Ranae (Frogbit) disappears to the bottom of the pond for winter it is advisable to collect some of plant growth in a bucket if you are going to do an Autumn pond clean out. The buds of Frogbit are approximately 1/4" long x 1/8" wide - looking similar to apple pips - and can easily be removed by accident. Replace in the pond for protection in winter once the Autumn cleaning is complete.

One drawback is that one is not able to visit the company. Perhaps hey should organise open days.
